What happens to Plants and Animals in the winter?

Yesterday, we had a great day getting back into the swing of things here in Fort Kindergarten. We started our morning off by welcoming each other back to school. We sat in a circle and we all talked about our exciting breaks! A lot of my friends enjoyed opening presents, watching Star Wars and a few even got a trip to the beach!

Then, we took our thoughts we had just discussed about our breaks and wrote them down. My friends remembered to use detail in their drawings, finger spaces AND periods! I was so proud!

Then, we heard from a Park Ranger from Camp Croft here in Spartanburg County. He told us all about what happens to Plants and Animals in his park in the Spring, Summer and Fall seasons, but then he left us with a challenge... he didn't know what was going to happen to plants and animals in the winter! We knew we had to get down to business!

Today, in order to help our Park Ranger friend out, we re-visited our adopted tree to discuss what is happening to plants during the winter. We had a discussion about our different clothes and what the weather feels like, in addition to the changes in our tree.

Then, we came inside and started to record our noticings in our Wonder Journals for our book for our Park Ranger friend. We will be compiling everything we learn into an informational book for him throughout our unit.

We can't wait to learn about animals in winter and how they stay safe during all this cold! Stay tuned for our learning!

Trees in Winter

This year, we have been working on our "Tree of Seasons" canvas. This canvas helps us to see all the ways that trees change and adapt throughout the year. We have already experienced summer and fall on our tree, and today we thought about Winter. We read The Season's of Arnold's Apple Tree by Gail Gibbons, and we decided we needed to go outside on a Wonder Walk and go observe what happened to our adopted deciduous tree and our adopted Evergreen tree.

When we got outside to our deciduous tree, we noticed it had NO leaves left on it! We remembered the leaves falling off during the fall, but now they were all gone!

I asked my friends about what they noticed, here was Linzey's response:

We walked over to the Evergreen tree, and we noticed it still had all its' needles!

We wondered what kept those needles on the tree, but Mason remembered from our Fall PBL unit!

When we came back inside, we looked back at our Tree of Seasons canvas. We decided since there were no leaves on the trees, we shouldn't color any on our canvas!

We can't wait to see what our adopted trees look like in the Spring!

Back To School!!

Welcome back! Happy New Year!

We are so excited to be back with all of our friends and get back to learning! We started off our morning by sharing what we did over our breaks. We then wrote about our breaks so that we could make sure we shared everything we wanted to about all of the awesome things we got to do over the holiday!

Our next unit will be focusing on the season of Winter, specifically, what happens to plants and animals during Winter. So, I asked my kinder friends two questions: What do you know about Winter? And, What do animals do in Winter? Here are a few of their answers...

After we discussed our answers, we decided to go on a "Winter Wonder Walk" to see what we noticed about Winter. Since it was so cold outside, this was a very short walk, and we came back inside to see what we noticed. :)

We created a noticing chart of things we noticed about winter. Here are what some of my friends recorded about what they noticed about Winter.

We will be adding more observations/adding to what we learn as our unit continues! I am so excited to be back in the classroom with your child! I can't wait to see what all we learn and how much we grow for the rest of this year!
