4th Grade Reading Buddies

Today was such a fun day! Despite the rainy weather, we had the opportunity to attend a PBIS pep rally, and learn all about the behavior expected of us this year.

Then, this afternoon, we got our first chance to team up with Ms. Morrison's fourth grade class as reading buddies! Today was the first day they came to our class to read with us. We had so much fun, that as soon as Ms. Morrison's class lined up to leave, my friends wanted to know when they were coming back!

Thanks Ms. Morrison's class! We already can't wait for next week!

Mrs. Wishy Washy Story Retelling

This week during reading, we specifically focused on talking about the 3 ways you can read a story. We read the same story all week and practiced the 3 ways to read. We read the pictures, we read the words, and on Thursday and Friday, we practiced retelling the story.

Today, we created puppets to use both at school and at home to practice retelling the story. Retelling the story is often a hard concept, because not only do you have to get the order of events right, but you have to remember important details as well! I was really impressed by my friends who retold the story for me today.

Here are some sweet videos of my friends who retold the story, Mrs. Wishy Washy, today for me.

Fantastic Week 5

We have had another amazing week with tons of fun! We have finished our Map Books, learned new ELA and math stations (our absolute favorite!) and we've learned about what maps are and how they function from reading the Gingerbread man and discussing the places he visited.

One of our favorite parts of the day is ELA stations. We just can't get enough! So far, we have introduced read to myself, work on writing, word work, and this week, we introduced read to someone. We have absolutely loved practicing our reading skills with our friends. Here are some sweet pictures of us in our new read to someone ELA station.

Throughout the week, we finished our map books, recreating pages from our mentor text like, Map of my Heart, Map of my Classroom, Map of my School, and Map of my Community. We have loved using labels to add more detail to our drawings.

In math, we have focused on counting, representing and writing numbers 1-5. This is often a hard (but crucial) concept to nail in the beginning of the year. Through our whole group practice and independent practice during math stations, I think we're well on our way to have a great idea of numbers and what they truly represent.

This week, we really focused on tracking print from left to right and knowing our finger points to a word when there are spaces on both sides of the word. We read the book, Mrs. Wishy Washy, every day this week. We REALLY loved this book and getting several opportunities to practice with the text. Here we are practicing unscrambling a sentence in our reading journals. After we unscrambled the sentence, we practiced our one-to-one matching and pointing while reading.

We also have started 100 book challenge this week. As you probably know, we have been working on our stamina for about 3 weeks now, and this week we have read all the way up to SEVENTEEN minutes!! It has been very exciting and we have worked VERY hard.

We have really practiced our logging skills. We have been working on transferring the titles of our books to our logs.

Lastly, we have added our "writing about math" station this week. We have used dry erase markers to practice representing and writing our numbers. It has been so much fun!

We are so excited to start our community helper unit next week. I know that there are a lot of fun things to come! Stay tuned for more learning and fun!

Super Second Week!!

Wow! This week was so jam packed with learning and fun, I decided to cover all of it in one big post!

In writing this week, we discussed Author / Illustrator Mo Willems. He writes really silly and funny stories. The first story we read this week was called Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! We were inspired by Mo's character, Pigeon, and wrote about our own Pigeon, doing silly things.

We also read Mo's book, Knuffle Bunny, this week. This is one of my favorite books! We brought our own special fluffies to hold while we read the story!

Then, inspired by Knuffle Bunny, we wrote our own stories about our fluffies that we brought to school.

We also started our station rotation this week. This week, we participated in engaging stations that showed us how to work quietly for an entire ten minute period. We learned how to clean up from a non-verbal cue and how to work together cooperatively. Next week, we will be introducing our first academic station- Work on Writing.

In math, we have worked on numbers 1-5, and have focused on the multiple representations of the number. Each day, we have two pages in our journals (one filled out for reference, and one blank) that we will out together. We have also created a unique number number line showing the multiple representations of the numbers 1-5. We will continue to focus on numbers 6-10 next week.

In reading, we focused on building our reading stamina by reading a story one of three ways (reading the words, reading the pictures or re-telling a story!) Right now, we have worked up to reading 4 minutes independently. Next week, I am hoping we will build our stamina up to at least ten minutes!!

I am looking forward to all the learning we will do next week!
