This week, we have learned about and investigated apples all week. We have learned all about apple parts by cutting apart apples and investigating them ourselves. We have read the non-fiction text, Amazing Apples, and learned facts about apples from our reading. Today, we had one last thing we wanted to know... do apples sink or float when you put them in water?
We read the non-fiction text, What Can Float? and we discussed what the terms float and sink mean. Here is one of our interpretations of what those words mean...
Then, we had to make a prediction of what we thought the apple would do when we put it in water, sink or float. We discussed what the word "predict" meant. We said it was a lot like a smart guess, but you can't be sure. Kind of like the weatherman on the news!
Then, we went to our tables to record our predictions. We placed our apples either "above" water for floating, or "under water" for sinking.
It's hard to see because of the pencil on construction paper, but this friend said, "I predict it will sink."
"I predict that it's going to float."
"I wonder if it's going to float."
Again, hard to read, but if you look very closely you can see that this friend wrote, "I know that it is going to sink."
Then, we put the apple in a bowl of water. It floated! Here was our reaction.
We all got an up close look at the apple in the water...
Then, we verified that it was actually floating and it didn't just look like it. Here is Cooper explaining how he knew it was floating and not just sunk to the bottom.
Then, we recorded what happened...
This was so fun! Next week, we will be investigating pumpkins and we will go on our field trip to the Strawberry Hill Pumpkin Patch! I can't wait, it's going to be a great day!
