Today, we began an exciting topic that we will cover all month long in November. This morning during our morning message, we discussed that it was a new month, November! I asked my friends what we celebrate in November, which they already knew the answer to... Thanksgiving! My friends and I discussed the yummy food we eat in Thanksgiving, but then we got down to the real reason why we celebrate... being thankful for what we have and celebrating the pilgrims and the Native Americans long ago.
When discussing the Native Americans and the Pilgrims, we discussed how life for them was very different than life us for us now... including the way they lived. This is when we looked at the tee pee frame in the back of our classroom.. we noticed this was a lot smaller than the homes we live in! We also noticed there is no way for there to be running water and electricity in the tee pee.. yikes! That concerned a lot of us.. we realized quickly that we have a whole lot to be thankful for.
We also noticed that tee pees weren't just frames, they had coverings on the outside. So we decided we needed to make our own outside covering for our tee pee. We reviewed a sheet of Native American symbols and what they mean. We discussed how Native Americans didn't use letters like we do, they told stories with symbols... so we got right to it! We painted our own class story on our tee pee cover.
This was our progress before we went to lunch, a good bit done.. and a good bit left to go!
When we got back from lunch, we got busy again!
Here is our finished tee pee cover!
And here is our tee pee! We are very proud and we worked very hard on it. We are excited to have it up the whole month of November!
