Why is the mother duck important?

This week we have begun creating our own informational books, modeled after our mentor text, An Egg is Quiet. We have observed numerous other informational texts and created a cover and table of contents.

We really put our new learning into action yesterday when we asked, "Why do we even need an incubator for our eggs?" After some research and discussion, we decided that we needed an incubator because while the ducklings are still inside the eggs, we need something to help us keep them warm and safe until they're ready to hatch.

Here are some examples of the pages created about the incubator in our books..

"The incubator is like the mom."

"The incubator plays the role of the mother duck. It keeps the eggs warm."

Today, we made the connection between the incubator and the real mother duck. We asked, "Why is the mother duck important?" And we wondered what the mother duck does that the incubator does as well. We read Jemima Puddle Duck by Beatrix Potter and noticed that Jemima did everything she could to keep her eggs safe. We had a discussion on why we thought mother ducks did these things to keep their eggs safe.

Here are some of our pages about the mother duck from today...

"The mother duck takes care of her baby ducks really good. She also takes very good care of them."

"The mother duck looks for a safe place to keep her eggs. She wants to keep her baby ducklings safe."

"The mother duck looks for a safe place for her eggs. She wants to keep her eggs safe. The momma duck does whatever she needs to do to keep her eggs safe."

I mean, WOW!!! Can you believe these are writings from students in KINDERGARTEN!?!?! Amazing!! I am so thrilled about sharing this experience with my kindergarten friends.

More fun is on the way! :)
