How are gummy bears made?

This week is American Education week. For "Wonder Wednesday" we looked at our Wonder of the Week: "How are gummy bears/worms made? Can we make them at school?"

We began our day by using this for our Wonder of the Day. Students came in and wrote in their journals about what they wondered about the gummy bears. Many students wondered how gummy bears get there colors. A few students also wondered why gummy bears are chewy.

Then, I asked my friends what they think gummy bears are made of. We had some great predictions and thoughts. Here are some of our thoughts:

After our discussion of what gummy bears are made of, I asked my friends if they thought we could make gummy bears at school. This question was met with a resounding "no!" Then, we decided we were going to try anyway!

We used this wonder from  Wonderopolis and followed this recipe from the website from the "Try it Out" section.

We discussed what we thought the jello and gelatin would do and why we were putting them in our gummy bear mix.

When we mixed them all together with the water, we were surprised to find that it looked a little bit like apple sauce! We read next in the recipe that we needed to warm up our gummy mixture to help the sugar and flavors mix well. While I heated up the solution, my friends sang some of our phonics songs :)

Then, we put the warm solution into candy molds! This is when my kindergarten friends decided that maybe we COULD make gummy bears!

We all observed and got a closer look of the gummy bears.

Then, we popped them in the freezer for about 45 minutes to set up.

And here's our final product!

After observing our final product, we went back to our seats to taste what we made, and write in our wonder journals!

We had so much fun creating gummy bears! I hope that you can take the recipe we used and use it at your home too! It is easy, delicious and fun!!
