How is the way we live different from the way Native Americans lived?

Today in social studies, we began comparing the way we celebrate Thanksgiving to the way the first Thanksgiving was celebrated. We began by looking at homes of Native Americans and Pilgrims and comparing them to the way our homes look today. We noticed that both Pilgrims and Native American homes look different than the way our homes look today. We also looked at pictures of teepees.

Then, we began looking at our teepee! We had a discussion about the differences in the way Native Americans lived vs. the way we live now. We noticed that there is a lot less room in a teepee than is in our homes. Also, a lot of us did not like the idea of having animal skin as blankets and that straw mats would be not NEARLY as comfortable as our beds. Suddenly, a lot of us were very thankful for what we have at home :)

We also discussed how Native American writing did not use the same alphabet we use. We discussed the symbols used by Native Americans and used sheets to help us decorate the cover of our teepee and tell a story. We worked very hard all afternoon on our teepee and this teacher is VERY proud of the final product!!

We worked in groups and rotated to fill up the whole queen-sized sheet that would be the cover of our teepee.

Our completely painted cover! I am so proud of the way my friends worked today. This looks amazing and tells a wonderful story!

Our final product!
